Elks "Most Valuable Student" Scholarship

The  2013 Elk's National Foundation "Most Valuable Student" Scholarship application is now available.  Any high-school senior who is a U.S. citizen is eligible to apply.  Scholarships are based on students' scholarship, leadership, and financial need.  Applications are available in Ms. Knight's office or online at www.elks.org/enf/scholars.  Application deadline is December 7, 2012, and must be submitted to the Elks Lodge nearest your home.  You may also contact Ms. Knight for further information.

University of Mobile "Visit Days"

The University of Mobile announces its Visit Days, as follows:  September 28, 2012; November 2, 2012; November 30, 2012; February 15, 2013; and, March 15, 2013.  A $2,000 scholarship is available to new traditional undergraduate students who attend UMobile Visit Day, apply for admissions, and enroll at UMobile.  It awards $250 per semester for up to 8 consecutive semesters, excluding summers.  Go to www.umobile.edu/visit for further information.

The University of North Alabama

New College Cost Comparison Tool

The U.S. Government Consumer Finance and Protection Bureau launched a new college-cost-comparison tool in April of 2012, to help college-bound students and their families.  This tool can be used to compare school data and relevant financial factors to make a more informed decision.  You can enter up to three schools to get started with a basic comparison.  Go to http://www.consumerfinance.gov/payingforcollege/costcomparison.

Birmingham-Southern College

Birmingham-Southern College announces its admissions deadlines, as follows:  Early Action is December 1, 2012!  Regular decision is February 1, 2013!  Admission is dependent upon availability after February 1, 2013.  

Preview Day is scheduled for Saturday, October 6, 2012, for seniors and juniors.
Sample "Southern Day" is scheduled for Friday, October 26, 2012, and for Monday, November 12, 2012, for seniors.
Fine Arts Scholarship Day is scheduled for Saturday, February 9, 2013,  for ACCEPTED students only.

Tuskegee University's Fall 2012 Open House

The 2012 Fall Open House Program, sponsored by the Office of Admissions and Enrollment Management, is scheduled for Saturday, September 29, 2012.  During this special event, administrators, faculty, staff, and students representing various departments and programs will share information on Tuskegee University programs and will be available to answer any questions.  There will also be an informational session in the Chappie James Center.   Go to www.tuskegee.edu/admissions.

Jacksonville State University's "Fall Preview Day"

Jacksonville State University will host its annual Fall Preview Day on Saturday, September 29, 2012.  It is designed for seniors, juniors, and sophomores who wish to experience JSU at its very best.  It will begin at 9:00 a.m. when students will be able to browse academic departments, take a campus tour, and ask questions about the services offered at JSU.  Visit www.jsu.edu/previewday for more information, location, and time of the event.

Alabama State University "Connection Day"

Mississippi State University's Fall Preview Day

Mississippi State University will have its Fall Preview Day on October 8th and October 22nd.  There is a $10.00 charge per person.  Upon arrival, students will receive a packet of information and a t-shirt for their participation.  Lunch will be provided along with some of MSU's famous ice cream.  Space is limited, so register as soon as possible.  Go to www.statement.msstate.edu.

The University of Alabama's "E-day"

The University of Alabama will host its annual E-day on Thursday, October 11, 2012, from 8:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m.  Students, parents, and teachers will again be provided a free BBQ lunch.  You will be able to explore the rewarding opportunities available in engineering and computer science.  You will also receive information about admissions, housing, financial aid, scholarships, the honors programs, and more.  On-site registration will begin at 8:00 a.m. in front of H.M. Calhoun County Farmers Federation Scholarship

The Calhoun County Farmers Federation is again sponsoring two $2,000 college scholarships for students planning to pursue a course of study in agriculture or a related field.  Requirements for applicants are as follows:

  • Must be a U.S. citizen and resident of Calhoun County.
  • Must be planning to pursue a career in agriculture or related field.
  • Must include a letter of acceptance from the university of choice.
  • Must include an official, signed high-school transcript, including ACT/SAT scores.
  • Must include three letters of recommendation (one should be from someone in the agricultural field).
  • Must be an ALFA member to receive scholarship.

Anniston Community Education Foundation - "2012 Get Lifted College Tour"

The Anniston Community Education Foundation's (ACEF) "2012 Get Lifted College Tour" is a component of the ACEF Youth Coalition.  This Tour is designed to assist in motivating students in targeted communities to further their education upon graduation from high school.  It is ACEF's belief that students who can visit college campuses and experience campus life first hand will be more inclined to want to attend and make the necessary adjustments to prepare for college.

This year, the Foundation will take 20 students, 11th and 12th graders, to tour the following universities:  Florida A&M University; Florida State University; and, Troy University.

Students will be required to submit an application to the ACEF office by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, September 14, 2012!    Students and their parents will be responsible for getting their applications to the ACEF office by the deadline date and time.  All applications will be reviewed by the review committee to select the best candidates for the tour.  Applications may be picked up in Ms. Knight's office.

Megan Meier Memorial Scholarship Fund (for students active in anti-bullying programs)

The Megan Meier Memorial Scholarship is for outstanding high school seniors who have shown a commitment to bettering their communities regarding all forms of bullying.  This Scholarship is for students who have succeeded both inside and outside the classroom and who may not be able to attend college without financial assistance.  It is a reward for the impact the student has had on his/her community and the difference the student has made in the lives of others.  The Megan Meier Memorial Scholarship Fund will select five seniors to receive $1,000 in scholarship funds to put toward their college education.  Eligibility criteria are as follows:

  • Student must be a full time senior in high school.
  • Student must have a minimum 2.50 GPA.
  • Student must have a written recommendation from a member of the school faculty or staff that serves as validation that the applicant's words and actions promote an environment of acceptance and tolerance of differences within the school community.
  • Student must submit, along with the application a one- to two-page essay describing how his/her accomplishments relate to the mission of the Megan Meier Foundation; list all extracurricular activities participated in during high school, both within and outside the school; describe ways the student has proactively helped to lessen all forms of bullying within the school community; list professional goals after graduation from college; describe why student feels he/she deserves this scholarship; and list any special circumstances the student would like the Scholarship Committee to consider when reviewing his/her application.

Horatio Alger Alabama Scholarship Program

The Horatio Alger Alabama Scholarship is funded through the generosity of the Walter and Suzanne Scott Foundation.  The Scholarship provides financial assistance to Alabama students who have exhibited integrity and perseverance in overcoming personal adversity and who aspire to pursue education.  To be eligible to apply for the Horatio Alger Alabama Scholarship, students must meet the following criteria:

  • Be enrolled full time as a high school senior in Alabama, progressing normally toward graduation and planning to enter college in the fall after graduation;
  • Have a strong commitment to pursue and complete a bachelor's degree at an accredited institution located in the U.S. (students may start at a two-year institution and then transfer to a four-year institution);
  • Have critical financial need ($50,000 or less adjusted gross income per family);
  • Be involved in co-curricular and community activities.
  • Demonstrate academic achievement (minimum 2.0 GPA);
  • Be a resident of Alabama; and,
  • Be a U.S. citizen.

Washington University in St. Louis Danforth Scholars Program

Washington University in St. Louis invites students who are interested in attending this fine university to be nominated for the William H. and Elizabeth Gray Danforth Scholars Program.  To be nominated for this Program, students must exhibit a capacity for service and leadership, as well as academic excellence, and embrace the challenges of a rigorous academic curriculum.  Students must be mature, have strong moral character, selflessness, and commitment to the community.   Once the student is nominated, an application will be sent to the student.  Deadline for application to be received by Washington University in St. Louis is January 15, 2012!  See Ms. Knight if you are interested in attending this university.

100 Black Men of Atlanta College Fair

100 Black Men of Atlanta, Inc. invites you and your parents to the 2012 College Fair on Saturday, September 29, 2012, from 10:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. at the Georgia World Congress Center (GWCC), Building C, Hall B1 (off of Northside Drive) in Atlanta.  Admissions and financial aid officers from a number of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), along with other majority colleges and universities from Florida, Louisiana, Alabama, Tennessee, South Carolina, and Georgia, will showcase their respective institutions at this annual, FREE Fair, that is geared towards seniors and juniors.  It is recommended that students take copies of their most recent transcripts as well as any ACT/SAT/PSAT scores.  To register for the Fair and for further information, go to collegefair@100blackmen-atlanta.org.  At this site, you will find the College Fair Registration Form that must be mailed or faxed before September 14, 2012!
